Robert McCloskey1914年出生于美国一个小镇，他在自述中说，他的手指刚长到能练音阶的时候就开始上钢琴课；接着又开始玩手风琴和黑管；后来又迷上了各种电器，组装小火车和小吊车。在高中时，他开始画插画，曾经给神话故事做插图，但是思路不对，从此以后他开始先画画再配文字，创作自己熟悉的故事。

Make Way for Ducklings《给小鸭子让路》让他获得了1942年凯迪克金奖。1949年，《小赛尔采蓝莓》荣获凯迪克银奖。1964年，他取得迈阿密大学的文学博士学位，2000年他被美国国会图书馆列如“当代传奇人物”名录。2003年他在家中病逝。
